On the language of the Elves

9-15-2022 M. Hoskins

You may be wondering what all that chicken scratch on this card says. The learned among you will recognize it as elvish. Let me tell you what it says.

There is a lot of information on this fictional language and much of it is debatable in its veracity. While Tolkien wrote much on the topic, the lexicon remains fragmentary and lots of people have added to it over the years. I've done my best to compose the text in the short period of time I had to get the cards out on time, but I'm not an expert.

Reading left to right with the top being towards the inside of the ring, it says:

"Come, eat, and drink of the feast. Ever is your presence a joy. Where is the meeting? I will lead you. Come near the fire, speak friend, and enter."

I have used RealElvish.net's Woodelven Sindarin phrasebook, because Quenya sounds too snooty. Both dialects use Tengwar, the elvish script, but differ in the placement of their vowels. I then used Tecendil.com to transliterate the Latin script into Tengwar and the Tengwar Annatar font to create the text. If that seems overly complicated, know that this was the easy way. It's possible to spend a lot of time on this sort of thing, if you're some sort of nerd. Any elves reading this are welcome to point out errors, but it's too late to do anything about it now anyway.

We hope this card guides you well and we look forward to sharing the feast with you. Galo Anor erin râd lîn.
